Counselling and therapy for individuals

Welcome, and thank you for visiting Intuition Counselling and Psychotherapy

I am a reflective, inclusive and understanding counsellor who has experience with both young people and adults in 1 to 1 and group settings. I am a black British therapist of Caribbean and African descent. I offer counselling face to face, over Zoom, telephone, email and instant messenger. I am a fully qualified Counsellor and a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

If you are reading this you are probably thinking about taking a step towards seeking help and maybe struggling with something that you feel you can no longer tackle alone or maybe you just don’t feel like yourself, which is ok, it is not unusual and no one should have to face difficult situations on their own, I believe no one should have to suffer.

I have worked with clients on a long-term and short-term basis from all walks of life and pride myself on the diversity of my clients. I have worked in a very busy NHS-funded counselling service where my clients are referred to me by the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust.

As well as being a therapist, I am also a psychoeducation facilitator and have created and delivered mental health workshops for various non-profit organisations and Self Space. I am also proud to provide mental health support in a group setting for Dawn Heels (Award winning fibroids awareness champion). I have also written an article about black mental health for JazzFm Voices in reflection of Mental Health Awareness week which you can read here.

Taking those steps to start therapy can be difficult but a positive, empowering step.

Please read on to find out more about how I can help you.

How can counselling help?

Life can be challenging and no matter how close you are to family and friends, it can sometimes be hard to share everything with them. Counselling can give you the space to explore your feelings, behaviours and reactions to life that maybe you intuitively know is not you?

I am a sensitive listener and my clients often feedback to me a real sense of being heard in our sessions and being made to feel comfortable straight away.

Talking through your issues and making sense of how you are feeling can make you feel empowered and propel you to take action to make the changes you feel you need in your life.

I have a specific interest in anxiety and depression resulting from the ‘isms’ and ‘shoulds’ in life including but not limited to sexism, racism and other social constructs which can impact our identity. I have helped people with a range of issues including workplace issues, relationships, bereavement, confidence, and self-esteem, racial trauma, sexuality and life transitions.

I am passionate about helping those with mental health issues and I am also a Black Minds Matters therapist which is a charity that offers 12 weeks of free therapy to those experiencing racial trauma. I have helped to produce their social media content on issues such as microaggressions and hair discrimination and have written an article on black mental health for Jazz FM Voices.

What to expect?

The journey starts either by contacting me through my website or over the phone. I will then arrange a free 20-minute call with you to discuss why you would like therapy and if you would like to book a first full session.

It is also a chance to ask me any questions (something I encourage throughout the journey) and I am happy for you to then go away and think about it – it is important you find the right therapist for you.

It is of course also ok to make a booking when we speak if you choose to.

Frequently asked questions

What much do you charge?

Online sessions are £70 a week for a 50 minute session (clinical hour), the 1st session is payable 48 hours in advance.  Due to the online nature of our sessions I take payment by bank transfer only. Face to face appointments (via Self Space) are £90 per session.

How do I make an appointment?

Please email me, use the contact me form or telephone me to make an appointment.  I aim to answer all forms of contact within 48 hours (Monday to Friday) and please leave a voicemail if I am unable to take your call.

We will then arrange a 20 minute initial call at a convenient time to further discuss your needs. If you are happy with everything we can then book in your first full session or you can go away and have a think about it – your choice!

How does online counselling work?

Online counselling gives you the opportunity to access counselling support at a time and in a place which is convenient to you. Just like face to face counselling, online counselling can provide support for a broad range of personal difficulties.

All online sessions take place on a secure video conferencing platform called Zoom.  No sessions are ever recorded.  It is best to be in a confidential space and counselling sessions are normally provided on a weekly basis on the same day, although if flexibility is needed that can be discussed. I hold an additional diploma in Online Counselling methods.

Is counselling confidential?

What you say in counselling is confidential and what we discuss stays between us.  However, there are a few exceptions to this, which I will discuss at our first meeting.

How many sessions will I need?

if unsure how many sessions to start with, I would invite you to try a block of 6, 10 or 12 sessions with a view to reviewing at the midway point and towards the end to discuss if you feel further sessions are needed. It is of course also ok to ask for ongoing sessions which will then be reviewed throughout the process.

At the beginning of your journey, I lean towards offering counselling on a weekly basis and not fortnightly however this is open to discussion. This is due to the therapeutic relationship taking time to be built between therapist and client and this is one of the most important aspects of counselling. Therapy can often be a slower process and take the form of more of a ‘check in’ if sessions are fortnightly before we have got the chance to build a foundation and rapport.
